The King County Sexual Assault Resource Center (KCSARC) has appointed Kate Krug as their new Chief Executive Officer. In late 2023 the former CEO, Mary Ellen Stone, announced her retirement after 44 years of leading the organization. It was then that the Board of Directors sought to fill her immensely large shoes with someone who would be just as committed to KCSARC to usher in a new chapter of leadership. Her direction for the organization will prove pivotal at a time when many public resources both federally and locally are facing severe shortfalls. Marilyn Sherron, KCSARC Board President expressed the Board’s position on bringing in Kate Krug in this way: We’re delighted to welcome Kate after an intense nationwide search. She’s a proven leader with a strong vision for the future. Kate stood out among many applicants for her strong experience in strategic fundraising in a challenging environment, and for program development grounded in principles of equity and inclusivity. That combination of skills and vision are needed to lead KCSARC forward at this moment in our history and to seize opportunities ahead. Mary Ellen Stone, KCSARC’s former CEO echoed this sentiment in saying, I am confident in the board’s decision to bring Kate aboard as KCSARC’s new CEO and appreciate the careful, deliberate approach they took to finding just the right person. I know Kate shares a deep personal commitment to working with our staff, board, and partners to prioritize continuity of service for survivors and their families, and a vision for eradicating sexual assault from our communities. In speaking of the opportunity ahead of her, Kate Krug has stated, Every year, KCSARC supports 5,000 survivors and their families, helping them find their own resilience to recover, and plays a critical role in supporting our community. The commitment and excellence of the staff, leadership, and board at KCSARC are inspirational, and I am humbled to join their efforts to give power and voice to victims of sexual assault, their families, and communities. Valtas is proud to have assisted with this search and is excited to see what Kate Krug will do at the helm of KCSARC in the years ahead. Please join us in congratulating both Kate and KCSARC! About Kate Kate Krug has almost two decades of nonprofit human services experience to draw on in her new leadership role. In her previous positions she has developed, implemented, and expanded critical programming for underserved and underrepresented communities. Most recently she was the Executive Vice President at Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW), based in New York City. There she supported the organization’s programming and fundraising goals, creating many new and innovative programs, which gained national recognition for the organization. Prior to her leadership role at NEW, Kate led fundraising efforts for several nonprofit organizations that serve some of our society’s most vulnerable communities – like victims of domestic violence and individuals experiencing homelessness. She has also served on the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence as the Board Vice Chair. Kate holds a Bachelor’s in Communication and Public Relations from Seton Hall as well as a Master of Science in Nonprofit Organizational Management focused in fundraising from Columbia University. Connect with Kate > About KCSARC KCSARC’s mission is to give a voice to victims of sexual assault, their families, and communities. Through their advocacy they aim to change beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors around sexual violence, as well as instill courage in those who have been affected by sexual assault to speak out. They first opened their doors in 1976 and three years later their staff authored the first-ever published book about child sexual abuse – He Told Me Not to Tell. In the years since, over a million copies of that publication have been sold, greatly extending the reach of their message of advocacy on behalf of those who have been assaulted. The following decade, KCSARC was featured in PBS series on the topic of sexual assault in children, giving more light to this difficult, but important, topic. In the decades since, KCSARC has expanded their reach to offer support and resources to an even wider group of people affected by sexual assault through activities like refuge support, youth programs, educational workshops, legal advocacy, legislation, digital initiatives, school programs, and even a topical podcast.
